Energize Program

A research collaboration between the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and The University of Texas at Austin

The Energize Program, sponsored by UT-Austin (through the Energy Institute and the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering) and Southwest Research Institute (through the Office of the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer) is a grant opportunity offered to enhance greater scientific collaboration between the two institutions with the expectation that the teams will jointly respond to future external funding opportunities. This program provides opportunities for researchers to work together in addressing issues of mutual interest and need, bringing together the capabilities, facilities, and expertise from both organizations. 1. Energy Institute Program

• Eligibility: Open to all Colleges or Schools, faculty/staff with PI status
• Estimated Number of Awards: 3, subject to availability of funds.
• Maximum Total Funding Per Project:
  • Up to $60,000 to the UT Austin PI from the EI. Thanks to contributions from CNS, CSE, and JSG
  • Up to $75,000 per year (up to $150,000 per project) to the SwRI PI from SwRI.
• Matching Funds for UT Austin Scope:
  • Though not required, proposals can include matching funds for the UT Austin scope. Proposals with matching fund contributions will be viewed favorably.
  • Acceptable matching funds may come from a College/School, Department, Industry Affiliate Program (IAP) or industry partner. Other discretionary funds or research gifts from philanthropic donors are also acceptable. No additional funds can be solicited from CNS, CSE, or JSG.
  • Proposals that include matching funds for the UT Austin scope must be disclosed to the SwRI PI prior to proposal submission. Please review the “SwRI Requirements” section for more information.

2. Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (PGE) Program

• Eligibility: Proposals require a PGE faculty member as lead UT Austin PI.
• Estimated Number of Awards: 2, subject to availability of funds.
  • Maximum Total Funding Per Project:
    • Up to $75,000 to the UT Austin PI from PGE.
    • Up to $75,000 per year (up to $150,000 per project) to the SwRI PI from SwRI.
    • Co-mingling of funds between UT Austin and SwRI is not allowed.

Timeline

How the Energize Program Works

• Energize provides opportunities for researchers to work together in addressing issues of mutual interest and need, bringing together the capabilities, facilities, and expertise from both organizations.
• Proposals must include at least one investigator with PI status from each institution – SwRI and UT.
• Co-mingling of funds between UT and SwRI is not allowed.
• SwRI will fund the SwRI scope of work for the project, and UT will fund the UT scope.
