Bio: Professor Alex Hanson received the B.E. degree from Dartmouth College and the S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined UT ECE in 2019 as an assistant professor. His research group is the Power Electronics and Magnetics Group, which focuses on the design of efficient and dense power conversion technologies for a variety of application spaces.
Abstract: Electrical power conversion is a bottleneck in many applications, including data centers, manned lunar and Mars bases, solar energy, and portable devices (all examples straight from current research projects in the Power Electronics and Magnetics Group). This talk will explain how power converters play such a crucial role, why they’re so hard to improve, and how to improve them anyway. This will be an accessible, high-level introduction to a highly multi-disciplinary field.
