Bio: Dr. Michael Young earned a PhD in Soil and Water Science from the University of Arizona in 1995, and has held research and leadership positions at Desert Research Institute, in Nevada, and the Bureau of Economic Geology at UT Austin. His research areas include landscape and groundwater recharge processes, energy/water/land issues, and desert ecohydrology. He is currently on the Graduate Studies Committee for the Energy and Earth Resources program and the Jackson School of Geosciences.
Abstract: Understanding landscape impacts from the development of fossil and renewable energy sources is essential to land use decisions and management. In his work, Dr. Young focuses on current and potential future landscape alteration stemming from oil and gas, wind and solar installations. In this presentation, he will discuss recent observations and estimates of land needed over the next ~30 years. His field site focuses on the Permian Basin of West Texas, an area of significant interest for energy production.
